Kirsten is an award-winning analyst with 15 year of professional experience collecting, evaluating and communicating information on complex problems. She founded Redefining Default LLC in 2020 as a way to apply her data science skills to marginalized communities; her primary interest is improving the lives of women. She is a recipient of the ODNI National Intelligence Integration Award and the Office Director's Award for Innovation. Kirsten has also received multiple awards for developing and teaching courses on quantitative data and tools, and for fostering an environment of continuous learning through technical mentoring and coaching. She has a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University in Applied Economics.
Kirsten has lived overseas for six and a half years, first in Munich, Germany, then Freiburg, Germany, and most recently in the United Kingdom, but she always returns to the DC Metro/Northern Virginia area. She and her spouse have three children, a large vegetable garden and orchard, and an old home built in 1887 which keep them very busy.
How I currently spend my time
Ken has a passion for troubleshooting difficult problems and finding elegant solutions. When taking on a project, he balances design goals with practical considerations like cost, level of effort, and scalability, giving clients a range of possible approaches. Ken has 16 years of experience as an engineer specializing in material science—particularly polymers and adhesives—and manufacturing. He is well versed in manufacturing techniques, such as CNC machining, 3D printing and composite fabrication, for prototypes and low-volume production. Ken has a B.S.E. in Plastics Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
Ken enjoys skiing and sailing, which he learned while growing up in Maine, and building robots in the garage with his kids.
